How to Pair a New Yamaha Smart Key Fob (Emergency Mode Guide)
If you’ve lost a key or need to add an additional smart key to your Yamaha scooter or motorcycle, you can pair a new fob using the built-in emergency mode. This guide from Smart Fobs walks you through the exact steps required to successfully register a new key.
This procedure applies to many models manufactured by Yamaha Motor Company that use a smart key system with an ignition knob and PIN entry via the dash indicator.
Step 1: Enter Emergency Mode
-
Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
-
Press and hold the ignition knob down.
-
Watch the smart key indicator light on the dash — it will blink after around 7–10 seconds.
-
Release the knob once it blinks.
-
Immediately press and hold the knob again until it blinks a second time.
-
Repeat this process one more time.
On the third blink, the light will stay on solid.
This confirms you have successfully entered emergency mode.
Step 2: Enter the 6-Digit PIN Code
You must now enter your bike’s unique 6-digit PIN:
-
Press and hold the ignition knob.
-
Count the number of indicator light blinks (this equals the digit).
-
Example: For digit “3”, wait for 3 blinks, then release.
-
-
Release the knob to confirm the digit.
-
Repeat this process for all 6 digits.
Successful PIN Entry
-
The smart key indicator light will remain solid ON once the correct PIN is entered.
If you only want to start the bike in emergency mode, you can now switch the ignition ON.
Leave the bike OFF if you want to register a new key fob and continue to the next step.
Step 3: Register the New Key Fob
Before proceeding, make sure:
-
Your new smart key fob is switched ON
-
You are ready to complete pairing immediately
Pairing Process
-
Right after entering the last PIN digit (while the indicator light is still solid), press and hold the ignition knob for 8 seconds.
-
Wait until you hear a beep.
-
Watch the new key fob LED — when it turns solid, press the key fob button twice.
-
The motorcycle should confirm successful registration by flashing the indicators.
Step 4: Exit Emergency Mode
-
Press the ignition knob and turn the bike ON.
-
Then turn the ignition knob to OFF and back to ON again.
This exits emergency mode and completes the pairing process.
Troubleshooting Tips
-
If the light does not stay solid after PIN entry, the code was entered incorrectly. Restart the process.
-
Ensure the new key fob battery is fully charged before pairing.
-
Perform the steps smoothly — delays between actions may cause the system to exit pairing mode.
